Newsgroups: rec.arts.books From: janet@netcom.com (Janet M. Lafler) Subject: Literary/Digestive Metaphors The Iron Stomach Syndrome: You can eat just about anything and get something from it. You consume the most difficult, notorious, unsavory stuff without the least sign of indigestion. As you get older, however, your digestion becomes more sensitive, and you find you can't eat things you used to love when you were a kid. The Tummy Ache (or "Sweet Tooth") Syndrome: You eat a whole box of candy in one sitting, and it makes you sick. For a long time afterwards, you can't even stand to look at that particular genre of bon-bon. The "You Are What You Eat" Syndrome: Life imitates art. You start to name your pets after your favorite foods. After a while you realize that you are beginning to resemble a potato. Reverse Peristalsis: Something goes down, and comes right back up, hitting the wall with a splat. The "Choose Your Poison" Syndrome: Your doctor has warned you. You know you ought to be more careful. But somehow you just can't stay away from it. Diarrhea: Something passes right through you without leaving any impression whatsoever. The next day, it's as though you never ate anything. Diverticulitis: Ayn Rand gets lodged in your digestive tract, causing much anguish, not to mention embarrassing flatulence. /Janet, aided in this sick little endeavor by David.
